British Champions Day 2022: Betting Preview

Punters rejoice, British Champions Day 2022 is here! It took a few years to capture the imagination, but now it is firmly established upon the calendar, one of the highlights of the Flat season of horse racing in 2022 promises to be the biggest and best edition yet.

In addition to the wonderful thoroughbreds on display, one of the great things about Champions Day is that there is often value to be gleaned from what are traditionally the most fervent horse racing betting markets of the entire Flat campaign.

Whether you’re a newcomer or a purist, our handy guide details the best approaches to keep in mind when it comes to having a Champions Day bet on horse racing:

Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup (1.25)

Champions Day begins with a bang with the longest race on the card. And what a race it promises to be. The two-mile Group 2 has been won for the last two seasons by Trueshan, the likeable stayer from Alan King’s yard.

Hollie Doyle’s partner is back to defend his crown, but he is on something of a retrieval mission, having suffered a shock defeat in the Doncaster Cup last time out. Trueshan will surely get his ideal conditions at Ascot, but he faces a monstrously challenging opponent in KYPRIOS.

Aidan O’Brien’s four-year-old colt has been a revelation since being stepped up to staying trips and is unbeaten in five starts this season – with his victory in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot the obvious highlight.

Kyprios is now the complete package and will surely take an awful lot of catching in the hands of Ryan Moore.

Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes (2.00) –

From stamina to speed, focus is now placed upon some of the fastest horses in Europe in this Group 1 over six furlongs.

The Sprint Stakes never fails to disappoint, but favourites have a disappointing record in the race and it could once again be ripe for a minor upset.

Enter stage right ART POWER, the fantastic sprinter from Tim Easterby’s yard in North Yorkshire. It remains a minor mystery that the five-year-old grey has yet to win above Group 3 level, but he has rarely had Lady Luck on his side when it matters.

Last season’s Sprint Stakes was a good example as he was drawn in the car park and was always going to be swamped by a high-class field.

Art Power splendidly won the Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh a few weeks ago and arrives at Ascot a much fresher horse than last season. Granted a touch more fortune, he will take an awful lot of pegging back.

Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (2.35)

The jury remains out as to whether or not this race quite captures the imagination of the other Pattern races on Champions Day, but it is invariably a feisty betting heat.

This season’s renewal looks no exception, with a winning selection likely to yield a tidy profit. That could be the case if the money is down for STAY ALERT, who is surely overpriced.

The criminally underrated Hughie Morrison has worked wonders with this three-year-old filly, who is progressing hand over fist. Though no match for Wind Star at Haydock, when the ground was probably too soft for her, she then confirmed her distilled potential with a brilliant victory in a Group 3 at Newbury.

Her winning distance was a neck, but that in no way tells the full story as she suffered an extraordinarily bad journey from pillar to post – and yet still won. There is an awful lot more to come.

Stay Alert

British Champions Day 2022 Odds: 8/1

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (3.20)

One of the great races of the Flat season this year has added poignancy following the death of the Queen and is sure to evoke many fond memories of Her Majesty for those in attendance at Ascot.

It should be a wonderful spectacle, too, as some of the best milers in the business go to post for the historic Group 1. Inspiral and Aldaary will be popular in the market – and rightly so given their impregnable formlines.

But the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes can often produce an upset, and perhaps MODERN TIMES might be the answer this year. Charlie Appleby’s Group 1-winning son of Dubawi finished second behind the mighty Baaeed in the Sussex Stakes on his penultimate start Glorious Goodwood and rubber-stamped that form with a stunning success in the Woodbine Mile in Canada a few weeks ago.

That form is right up there with the best on offer in this season’s renewal of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes – and yet he is much bigger in the market than the so-called protagonists.

British Champions Day 2022 Odds: 8/1

Qipco Champion Stakes (4.00)

It’s been a few years, but will we see a genuine superstar win one of the best races of the season? The answer, in all probability, is yes.

BAAEED is a freak of nature. In every definition of the word, he is a true wonderhorse – an unusual machine that could win a King’s Stand Stakes and even a Gold Cup. It’s a great pity that he did not run in the Arc, but Longchamp’s loss is Ascot’s gain as domestic racegoers will watch him in awe for one last time.

Adayar’s presence is fascinating, but it would be one of the greatest upsets in top-class British horseracing if Baaeed did not head off into retirement with another Group 1 in the locker.

Modern Times

British Champions Day 2022 Odds: 1/3

Balmoral Handicap (4.40)

This one-mile heat often feels like a bit of a curate’s egg on such an exemplary card, but it can often be one of the most interesting races.

With so much prize-money up for grabs, the proverbial Group-horse-in-a-handicap cliché seldom feels more prescient when it comes to finding the winner.

That theory makes DUBAI MIRAGE’s claims that much more compelling. The manner in which the five-year-old son of Dubawi hosed up over course and distance in early September was something special – with a 5lb rise in the weights for that victory anything but the end of the world.

Dubai Mirage would not want too much rain in the build-up to Champions Day, but he will have no issues on ground that is on the easier side of goo and has been intentionally kept on ice for this assignment. He could be a cut above.

Are you a fan of horse racing betting? In this case, you already understand the importance of a reliable bookmaker. In this article, you will find out how to find trustworthy platforms.

How to Choose Top Horse Racing Betting Sites

Year by year horse racing betting sites are only gaining popularity. This betting sphere attracts hundreds of thousands of new users in the UK. And since there are lots of punters wishing to make their bets, tons of unscrupulous or even fraudulent platforms began to appear.

Taking into account that the rules of horse betting are much more complicated and results are less predictable, the platform you bet on plays an important role. That’s why we decided to share some tips with you on how to recognize reliable horse betting sites. Also we will share some tips on how to choose the best online bookies.

Features of Reliable Horse Racing Betting Sites

How many times a day are you observing ads of new horse racing bookmakers that guarantee you tremendous winnings and bonuses? However, even if in the ad the company promises you so many attractive things, in real life everything may prove to be a little different. In this section, we will tell you what trustworthy horse racing betting platforms look like.

They Offer Live Streaming

It is quite important that the horse betting platform of your choice offers its customers live streaming of races. Otherwise, how would you make sure that your bet is winning? And it’s not only live streaming service that is significant. Some betting sites also provide interviews with racing experts prior to races in which they explain which horses, to their opinion, have better chances to win.

They Have Previous Performance Data

Most often than not the successful bet depends on knowing the previous performance data. This information helps punters to analyse the chances of winning. Thus, reliable horse racing betting sites will have a section devoted to previous performance of horses and jockeys. Some of the platforms might even offer you to watch previous races to make an informed decision.

They Provide Helpful Information

Whether a betting site is reliable or not can be easily spotted by the number of tools it provides for its customers. Good horse racing betting sites always publish information about results and upcoming races so the users could place a bet with the full knowledge of facts.

How To Distinguish Reliable Horse Racing Betting Platforms from Scammers?

After reading all of the previous paragraphs a logical question might have popped into your head. Namely, how can you distinguish a reliable UK horse racing betting platform from a scam service? That’s why in this section we’d like to provide you with some points that will help you not to get a victim of some untrustworthy services when making bets on horse races. You will find  more information in the table below.

Reliable Betting Platforms  Untrustworthy Betting Platforms
The first and the main distinguishing feature of reliable horse racing betting sites are transparent policies. The point is that a reliable platform will always be completely honest with its customers, and will never try to hide anything from its clients. An untrustworthy platform may not even have such policies, or, in some cases, it can hide some of the terms and conditions from its customers.
A reliable platform will always have a special UK gambling commission licence that gives it permission to conduct such activities. What is more important, all of the necessary licence information will be available and free to access. A lot of scam betting platforms do not have licences and permissions of any kind. Usually, they continue their fraudulent activity until they collect enough money. After that, they are closing or renaming themselves. In case you’ve made a deposit into an account on such a scammer horse racing website, you will hardly ever be able to get it back since the scammers will disappear with all the money.
If you want to check the horse racing betting platform’s reliability, you can simply contact the support team. A reliable betting site with a good support team will always answer all your questions. If you try to contact a support team on some unreliable platforms, most likely they will not provide an appropriate answer regarding any horse racing-related matter.

When Is Frankie Dettori Likely to Retire From Horseracing?

That’s the question on the lips of many flat horseracing fans and pundits alike. The enigmatic Italian has been at the peak of his jockey powers for three decades. Many liken him to the late great Lester Piggott, as the finest flat race jockey of the modern-day era. At the age of 51, Dettori would be forgiven for thinking about retirement, but he’s still very much active on the circuit. In fact, he would go on to win the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at the 2022 Royal Ascot which, according to oddschecker’s list of top events, still ranks as one of the top-five meetings in the UK horseracing calendar.

Just two months later, Dettori rode Trawlerman to victory in the Ebor Handicap at York, landing the £300,000 first prize. It was a poignant win for Dettori, given that he joined forces with trainer John Gosden once again, just weeks after a public fall-out between the pair which saw Dettori take the freelance route having worked in tandem with Gosden for many years. Post-race, Gosden described the fall-out between the two as the same as a football manager who benches a star player and reacts badly.

Gosden revealed that voicing his displeasure with Dettori’s performance at Royal Ascot has had a positive effect on the Italian’s recent form. Gosden admitted he was exasperated at not being able to “get [Dettori] to concentrate” at this year’s festival and the “public warning” appears to have refocused hearts and minds. Gosden added that when Dettori is “in the zone”, the veteran remains “absolutely top class”. Equally, Gosden described Dettori as a “menace” when he’s not at the top of his game.

The above comments from Gosden suggest that there is still life in the Gosden-Dettori partnership after all. When the relationship appeared fractured in the summer, reports suggested that Dettori had taken the freelance route to be free to enter some of the most iconic overseas races before he retires for good. Dettori even admitted recently at a charity race for retired star jockeys that he would soon be eligible for the event. However, recent victories with Gosden may just have kept that fire burning bright deep within.

Dettori certain to continue into the 2023 season

Even at the height of his frustrations at his long-time partner, Gosden, Dettori confirmed that he planned to continue racing into the 2023 season and then assess his options. Dettori has had some bookings overseas in Istanbul as well as the German Derby, while the Italian has also been in demand stateside with additional weekend bookings at Saratoga and Belmont Park.

Several high-profile trainers spoke out in Dettori’s defence in recent weeks. Aidan O’Brien, who has seen the Italian land several Group 1 winners for him throughout the years, described him as a “great rider” and “still is”. Meanwhile Hugo Palmer, another Classic-winner with Dettori, said Dettori remains the “only jockey alive” that can “reasonably claim” the tag of the “greatest [jockey] of all time”.

The biggest wins of Frankie Dettori’s career to date

Dettori’s career has long been characterised by his finest achievement in UK horseracing – landing the so-called ‘Magnificent Seven’ and winning all seven races in a meeting as part of Royal Ascot in 1996.

The odds of that happening on the day were said to be 25,051/1. One lucky bettor wagered on Dettori achieving this highly unlikely feat, earning him a payday of £500,000. It was a remarkable outcome, which included a landmark win in the iconic Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

It was a day that would put Dettori firmly on the British horseracing map. Although he had been racing for a handful of years, the Magnificent Seven was a moment in time that cemented him in the sport’s folklore forever. Not only was Dettori the toast of punters that day, he was also the scourge of the British bookies, who lost millions of pounds off the back of successive wins, many at short prices too.

His first win of that meeting was on board 2/1 favourite Wall Street, with the three-year-old colt proving easy for the Italian to tame to land the Cumberland Lodge Stakes. He followed that up with one of his most impressive victories of the day next. Diffident went into the 1996 Royal Ascot meeting with a set of frustrating performances. However, Diffident was inspired by Dettori to take the Diadem Stakes at pre-race odds of 12/1.

The third race was a heads-up battle between Dettori and Mark of Esteem and Henry Cecil’s talented charge Bosra Sham. With only a furlong remaining, it looked like a coinflip as to who would go on to win, but Mark of Esteem came up trumps in the closing stages to land the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and cement himself as Europe’s finest sprinter in 1996.

The fourth race could so easily have been the undoing of Dettori – the 26-runner Tote Festival Handicap. Dettori rode Decorated Hero, a 7/1 shot carrying top weight. It looked to be an uphill struggle on paper. However, Dettori was in the zone once again as he led Decorated Hero to remarkable win by three-and-a-half lengths. It was at this point that many wondered whether the impossible was indeed possible.

The Rosemary Stakes was yet another keenly contested affair. Dettori locked horns with long-time friend and on-course rival, Ray Cochrane, with Fatefully just about inching ahead of Abeyr to make it five wins in succession. At this point, Dettori was the talk of the racing world. With two more races left on the card, could he go on to achieve Ascot immortality?

A maiden win on board two-year-old Lochangel was a sure-fire thing in the Blue Seal Stakes. Lochangel was heavily fancied at this point, with Dettori’s earlier efforts seeing the horse’s odds slashed in to 5/4. It was all down to the seventh and final race of the meeting – the Gordon Carter Handicap. The eyes of Britain were transfixed on Royal Ascot, as Fujiyama Crest proved to be the Italian’s final and most historic mount of this day. Carrying top weight once more, Fujiyama Crest was by no means the ideal pre-race favourite, but Dettori’s exploits saw punters back him in from 12/1 to 2/1, before edging out Northern Fleet in the closing stages to seal a miraculous afternoon’s work for Dettori and connections.

His celebrations that day still live long in the memory of Royal Ascot enthusiasts and many will hope the veteran can provide plenty more before he calls it a day.

Who are the Highest-Rated Horses Heading Into the 2022-23 National Hunt Season?

We’re approaching the start of the new National Hunt campaign, which will go under starter’s orders in October.

The summer hiatus can be a long time in the development of racehorses, and those that have previously thrived over fences can regress while others that have had a nondescript hurdling career can suddenly be unleashed over the larger obstacles.

Of course, the best horses will simply carry on where they left off last season by winning major races, and that’s why the likes of Cheltenham Gold Cup champion A Plus Tard and Ryanair Chase winner Allaho are so fancied in the online betting odds for the Betfair Chase and King George VI Chase respectively.

Early season runs can be the undoing of the sport’s greats, however, with firmer ground and warmer temperatures somewhat levelling the playing field. That’s why it tends to pay to listen to betting experts in these situations, as they will have an excellent handle on which horses perform best at different points in the calendar year.

Of course, the official ratings are also a fantastic guide to the best racehorses in the business, and it will be interesting to see which of the highest-rated hurdlers and chasers live up to their billing in 2022/23 and which regress to also-ran status.

For now though, here’s a look at the horses which the analysts believe are the finest in training right now.

Shishkin

What a curious way for Shishkin’s ten-race unbeaten streak to come to an end. Nicky Henderson’s chaser was absolutely nowhere in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham, and in the end was so far adrift of the leaders he was pulled up by Nico de Boinville.

How will he fare in 2022/23? There’s no doubt Shiskin is a top chaser over two miles, but that trudge around Prestbury Park will live long in the minds of his backers.

Energumene

Shishkin’s conqueror in the Champion Chase, Energumene, furthered his credentials at the expense of his higher-rated opposition.

Two explosive victories in the Irish Arkle and Ryanair Novice Chase at Punchestown confirmed the French horse as one to watch in 2021, and he carried that form into the first half of 2022 too.

Energumene may have gone down by a length to Shishkin in the Clarence House Chase, but he returned with comprehensive wins in both Cheltenham and Punchestown’s version of the Champion Chase – the rivalry between this duo should hopefully go up another notch n 2022/23.

Chacun Pour Soi

Although highly-rated by those in the know, Chacun Pour Soi has something of the ‘bridesmaid, never the bride’ about him.

Like Shishkin, he tasted defeat to Energumene in both editions of the Champion Chase last season – unseating rider Paul Mullins at Cheltenham before finishing a valiant second at Punchestown.

That meant that Chacun Pour Soi won just once in the entirety of 2021/22… connections will be hoping for more this season.

Allaho

A tilt at a Ryanair Chase hat-trick might be the ultimate goal for Willie Mullins in 2022/23, but an eye-catching run over three miles at Punchestown at the end of last season may just suggest that there’s bigger fish to fry for Allaho.

The eight-year-old prevailed in the Punchestown Gold Cup ahead of the likes of Galvin, Minella Indo and Clan Des Obeaux, and that hints that an entry into the money-spinning Cheltenham Gold Cup might just be in the offing.

A Plus Tard

Although not unbeatable, as a career record of six wins in 14 starts attests, the reigning Gold Cup champion continues to thrive in the mud.

So A Plus Tard might not be one to back in the early going of the season – indeed, he’s only won once prior to Christmas before, but you can be sure this high-class three-miler will be a major contender for the National Hunt’s top prizes… particularly if Rachael Blackmore remains on board.

Which of these five highly-rated stars will fire and which will flop in 2022/23?
